Star Trek Chinese New Year Celebration Yee Sang Dinner (10 Feb 2006)

Fleet Captain Jas personal log:

In accordance to the ancient Chinese Calendar on the 13th Night on the Dog year, a few officers were eager to take their shore leaves and attend our annual Yee Sang Chinese New year celebration.  The event was held in Manhattan Fish Market Restaurant in Sogo Shopping Centre in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

We were greeted by an ancient activity called "traffic jam" that the corporal beings on Earth seem to have gotten used to with a primitive mode of transportation known as automobile.  The venue were crowded by humans after their work and some were on their way to perform their spiritual duties a day prior to Thaipusam.  Starfleet's intelligence indicated that I should avoid the jam by taking the single-directional-capsules (LRT) to Bandaraya and the journey took me less than 5 minutes from Titiwangsa stop.

The night were attended by Trekkies and Star Wars fans as fans from our sister site myscififan.com decided to join us and toss some good luck into the year 2006 together.  It is a good opportunity for our community as a whole to sell to the media that Star Trek and Science Fiction is alive and well in Malaysia.  We are happy that a Star Reporter, Ms. Grace Chen made time to attend our event.  She will be writing an article about us and do watch out for it in The Star soon.

Most only reached the venue at 8pm and we were able to chat in a casual environment screening the first TOS episode "Tholian Web".  We had a private area upstairs and were able to set up a big "family reunion" type of table fully equipped with 2 DVD players, a LCD projector, a powerful sound system as well as a projector screen.  While having our scrumptious seafood meals, Trekkies and non Trekkies were mingling in conversations in regards to the Star Trek's continuum, Star Wars Saga, costume making, etc.  A Star photographer reports to our venue first and begin taking shots of our community expressing his own interest in Star Trek and science fiction shows.  Later we greeted Grace and her family reaching our venue after putting up some fights with the traffic jam.  With her enthusiasm, she quickly round up the spoke persons from both websites and begin asking questions for her article.  We had a good time explaining our missions, interest, motivations, and pass events.  She was particularly interested in the costumes and the community's passions towards the genres.  During the interviews, two more Enterprise episodes were aired titled "In the Mirror Darkly" part 1 & 2 which has an interesting cross over with the TOS episode.

Upon completion of the interviews, we proceeded to the tossing of Yee Sang in hope to bring more luck to the communities and Star Trek/Star Wars.  Despite years of discipline as Starfleet officers, below pictures indicated the mess we managed to create in the spirit of the moment.  We wish to plan for more events and would hope 2006 will see new faces and a new level of excitement towards our favorite show and this community.  Happy Chinese New Year!!
